The Akhbar Filastin Digital Archive offers a unique window into the history of the Gaza Strip during a critical, yet under-documented, period. Spanning from March 1963 to June 5, 1967, this collection provides researchers with Open Access to one of Gaza's first local newspapers.
This newspaper documented daily life, local affairs, and political discourse as experienced by the Palestinian population under Egyptian military administration. By making this title accessible, the Global Press Archive hopes to shed light on the social, economic, and cultural realities of a "stateless" Palestinian population confined to the Gaza Strip. This era was defined by a profound refugee crisis, following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and restrictions on most forms of political and economic activity, as well as physical movement.
This archive is particularly valuable for scholars and researchers of Middle Eastern history, Palestinian history, and international relations. It serves as a primary source for understanding the dynamics of the Egyptian administration, the impact of the Palestinian refugee crisis of the mid-20th century, and the political climate in Gaza leading up to the Six Day War.
